Wild Rumpus Athens 2021: A Celebration of Diversity and Inclusion

Athens, Georgia - The Classic City is gearing up for its first-ever downtown Pride Parade, a milestone event that marks a significant step forward in promoting self-affirmation, increasing visibility, and building community among diverse individuals. This year's celebration will take place on November 13th, featuring a street festival with local vendors, musical talent, performance arts, an annual drag show, and a special new event to be announced soon.

At the helm of this year's festivities is Jarrett Mann Martin, President (2018-2022) of Athens Pride, along with Vice President and Spokesperson Cameron Harrelson. With their leadership, the organization has been instrumental in promoting LGBTQ+ rights and visibility in the community.

The idea for a Pride Parade in Athens began to take shape when local organizers gathered for an informal fun day at Lake Herrick in 1998. Since then, the event has grown significantly, with attendance numbers reaching an estimated 14,000 people in its 10th anniversary year. The festival has also had a significant economic impact on the city, generating $1.3 million in revenue.

This year's celebration will be held at the Augusta Common, featuring social distancing measures to ensure a safe and fun event for all attendees. With the success of similar festivals in other Georgia towns, Athens is poised to join the ranks of cities that have learned the importance of inclusivity and diversity.
